There are some theologians that believe we require an imagination in order to come to our faith. So in that sense, our imagination is an incredible part of our Christian walk. In the dictionary definition of imagination, we see it as a way of opening ourselves up to new ideas and concepts that go beyond what we already know. If that is the case, then the Bible embraces imagination as it tells us God’s story. It requires that we open our mind up in new ways, to new concepts, and we apply these concepts to our lives. Here are some Bible verses on imagination:
Wisdom and Revelation
Imagination is a huge part of how we embrace our faith. Really, when was the last time you saw someone walk on the water? But you can imagine it in your head. We can imagine living our lives the way God describes. We can imagine being Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet.Imagination has a large role to play in garnering wisdom from scripture.
Ephesians 1:17-18
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. (NIV)
Revelation 22:1-5
The angel showed me a river that was crystal clear, and its waters gave life. The river came from the throne where God and the Lamb were seated. Then it flowed down the middle of the city’s main street. On each side of the river are trees[a] that grow a different kind of fruit each month of the year. The fruit gives life, and the leaves are used as medicine to heal the nations. God’s curse will no longer be on the people of that city. He and the Lamb will be seated there on their thrones, and its people will worship God and will see him face to face. God’s name will be written on the foreheads of the people. Never again will night appear, and no one who lives there will ever need a lamp or the sun. The Lord God will be their light, and they will rule forever.(CEV)
Matthew 24:4
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you” (NIV)
Mark 7:6
Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.(NLT)
Acts 17:11
These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.(NKJV)
Isaiah 6:1-13
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (NIV)
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.(NKJV)
Giving Us Hope
A large part of our imagination is hoping for a better future. The Bible contains many messages of hope.If we cannot imagine that God can make it better, we tend to become depressed when things go bad. The Bible contains many messages of how we should imagine our lives, and the lives of those around us, to be so much more.
Genesis 11:6
The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.(NASB)
Mark 11:24
I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. (NLT)
Revelation 21:1
I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and so had the sea. (CEV)
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and active.Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(NIV)
